Empieza a tentar algunas vaquillas y se ve animado a seguir el camino de torear a pie, dejando la idea de ser varilarguero.<br /> <br /> Su presentación como novillero la realiza en una becerrada con el también principiante en los toros [[Agustín Castellano Martínez “El Puri”|&quot;El Puri&quot;]] de [[Bujalance]], los becerros que lidiaron pertenecían a la ganadería de Salvador Gavira, alcanzando los dos toreretes un éxito aceptable. Con traje de luces actúa ese mismo año en nueve festivales más. En el año [[1961]] tras torear con éxito en treinta y dos novilladas se presenta por primera vez con caballos el 12 de septiembre en [[Cardeña]], acompañado siempre por el &quot;El Puri&quot;; siendo nombrados como la &#039;&#039;&#039;&quot;Pareja de Niños cordobeses&quot;. &#039;&#039;&#039; Alcanzó la cabeza del escalafón de novilleros en el año [[1963]], pues toreó ochenta y cinco novilladas, presentándose en la plaza de las Ventas (Madrid) el 25 de septiembre del mismo año alternado como compañeros con Luis Parra &quot;Jerezano&quot; y [[Agustín Castellano Martínez “El Puri”|&quot;El Puri&quot;]] con novillos de Salustiano Galache. Siguieron contratos en aquel año y posteriores no en número tan cuantioso como cuando era novillero, pues graves cornadas le apartaban con frecuencia de los ruedos.
